Off-Site Citation Sync is layer 9 of the Entity Architecture and Governance Framework (EP-9). It requires 100 percent consistency of name, address, phone and entity name across external brand profiles. It is medium priority.
What layer 9 covers
Layer 9 covers how an entity is described outside its own website. EP-9 requires the name, address and phone details, known as NAP, and the entity name to be identical across external brand profiles, and those profiles to link back to the canonical entity page. It is the last layer because it confirms what the site has already built.
External profiles only strengthen an entity when they agree with the website. A profile that describes the entity differently is a second, conflicting source.
Which external profiles to align
The external profiles to align are the ones a machine is most likely to read as a record of the entity: a Google Business Profile for a business with a location, professional profiles for authors, official social accounts, and directory or press citations. Each should use the canonical name and link to the canonical URL.
Keep a list of these profiles with the date each was last checked. Consistency drifts over time as details change on the website and not everywhere else.
Linking profiles back to the entity page
Linking profiles back to the entity page closes the loop that layer 6 opens. The website points to trusted records with sameAs, and the external profiles point back to the canonical entity URL, as checkpoint CHK-EP-15 requires. Both directions then describe one entity.
After layer 9, the next step is to score the entity page against the 100-point Definition of Done.
What if a profile cannot be edited?
Ask the platform to correct it. Until it is corrected, leave that profile out of the sameAs list, because sameAs should only point at records that describe the entity accurately. Recheck it at the next audit; until then it keeps repeating the old details to anyone who finds it.
Checkpoints for layer 9
The checkpoints for layer 9 audit external profiles for matching name, address and description, and check that each profile links back to the canonical entity page. They are taken from the 15-point EP-9 technical audit checklist and keep their original identifiers, so an audit report can cite each one directly.
| Checklist ID | Audit layer | Mandatory verification requirement | Tool and method |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHK-EP-14 | L9 Consistency | Entity name, address, and description match across external profiles. | Citation Audit |
| CHK-EP-15 | L9 Social Sync | External brand profiles link back to canonical Entity Page URL. | Backlink Audit |
Fix differences at the source that is wrong, which is usually the external profile. Changing the website to match an outdated profile moves the inconsistency instead of removing it.
